Are running shoes essential?

I have recently started running on the treadmill, using my (cheap) squash shoes.

I am wondering whether I should invest in a good quality pair of running shoes. I had some pain in my knees after a 35 minute run the other day, I%26#039;m not sure if this is due to the shoes.

Thanks!

Are running shoes essential?
I%26#039;ve been in track and cross country running for three years. As a child I%26#039;d just run for fun but then I realized how shoes help you! Get one with great ventilation and one that is very light! It%26#039;ll give you a natural feel. And it%26#039;s important that it%26#039;s snug but not tight. Just the perfect fit!
Reply:Running shoes are obviously not essential because people have been running for centuries, but shoes made specifically for running have only been available for a few decades.

Having said that, probably even running barefoot would be preferred over squash shoes.

Break out your wallet and invest in some well-cushioned running shoes. I bet your knee pain was due to lack of cushioning in your shoes.
Reply:In my opinion, the two most important running accessories are comfortable shoes and a good sports bra. I%26#039;m guessing by your name, the latter is probably not necessary!

My sister-in-law runs several miles a day outside but whenever she runs on a treadmill, she has knee pain - wearing the same shoes. Not sure why but maybe this is why you had knee pain.

Either way, I would say if you are going to continue running, a good pair of shoes will definitely benefit you all over.

Happy running!
Reply:probably
Reply:If you are going to get serious, get some serious shoes. Go to a specialty running store and get fitted.
